The beautiful thing about The Bard’s Tale is that it doesn’t take itself seriously while it pokes fun at RPG tropes and mechanics. For instance, the first time you slay a wolf, the narrator humorously says, “that can’t be right,” after listing all the loot that the Bard conveniently finds amongst its innards. Much of the game’s hilarity stems from the Bard himself—flawlessly voiced by Cary Elwes (The Princess Bride).

The Bard’s Tale offers up hack-and-slash combat with a fun twist. The Bard can summon creatures to fight alongside him by shredding on his lute. Hearkening back to the dawn of PC gaming, Gurk III draws influence from the seminal Ultima series of the 1980s. While in some ways a stripped down RPG with primitive graphics, Gurk III provides a vast array of beasties, hoards of loot and battles that often enough offer deceptively deep tactical combat. Comprising three loosely related tiles: Tales of Illyria: Fallen Knight, Tales of Illyria: The Iron Throne and Tales of Illyria: Destines, mobile RPG fans with no bars to show for themselves will find themselves happily tapping away at this seminal indie RPG.

8. Pascal’s Wager

Giant Global’s Pascal’s Wager offers an RPG as close to Dark Souls as you’ll get on mobile. Taking place in a dark world—literally, the sun died long ago—Pascal’s Wager is full of intense combat against terrifying creatures known as the marred. In the style of other Lovecraftian games, too much exposure to the marred lowers your sanity. If your sanity gets too low, you’ll enter an altered state called abnormal in which enemies drop better loot but are vastly stronger.

Throughout the game you’ll be able to switch between the two-player characters seamlessly (except when in the midst of combat). Terrance is a gruff older man, with Geralt of Rivia vibes, while Norwood is a mysterious, masked one-armed man, wielding a coffin in lieu of a blade. If you’re looking for a truly unique RPG, look no further than Square Enix The World Ends With You�by. Players take on the role of Neku, an angsty teen who awakes to find himself participating in the Reaper’s Game—a weeklong competition between recently departed souls. The game’s setting, the Shibuya district of Japan, lends the title a beautiful atmosphere. Enemies will often drop pins when defeated. Equipping a pin allows Neku to use his abilities in combat.
